About Shangrila Farm

Robert and I are delighted to have this opportunity to share our beloved Lusitanos with you.

Shangrila Farm is located in beautiful horse country. Marion County, Florida, is heralded as the “Horse Capital of the World” with over 1,000 horse farms and 50,000 horses located in the county with champion bloodlines represented in almost all the breeds. At Shangrila Farm you will find some of the finest purebred Lusitano horses in the United States.

We have 28 acres of mineral rich soil, moderate climate, ancient oak trees, and lush pastureland creating the ideal environment for our broodmares with babies and the young horses to mature at their own pace.

Our love affair with the Lusitano started in Mexico where we were married in the courtyard of Abelardo Morales' fabulous Cortijo las Morerias, home of Andalusian and Lusitano world-class champions. We left Mexico with the purchase of a Lusitano stallion and a broodmare with impressive lineage. The horses became our passion. Our goal was to have a small breeding farm of purebred Lusitanos with quality bloodlines.

We are very loving and protective of our horses. They all have their own unique personality. Our training is in disciplines best suited for the horse. We offer only a limited number of horses for sale, and when we do, we try to match up the buyer and the horse. This is extremely important because Lusitanos thrive on a warm personal relationship. .

Our horses are handled daily. Stallions and mares are stalled in the same barn and the stallions benefit from this proximity by learning to be gentlemen no matter the situation. Because the babies are handled daily they learn how to be lead, to be bathed, to have their ears and whiskers trimmed, to remain calm while the farrier works on their feet, and to load in a trailer. All of our horses have pasture time and are stabled at night. Until the babies are old enough to join the older horses, we have “Copper” (mini horse) who is our baby sitter. Copper is really the farm boss and he lets us and the babies know this.
